Area Parks Recreation News

This District operated park is located in Salton City about ½ mile from the District Offices @ the N.W. corner of Harbor Drive and Iridescent Avenue.

Bird Watch / Nature Trail

Receives Funding from SCSD

by James G. Barrett

At the December 19th, 2006 Board meeting the Directors unanimously approved over $3,000 worth of funding for repairing and upgrading the Salton City Nature Trail & Bird Watch, which is located between the West Shores Golf Park and the Salton City Dry Camp.

The Nature Trail & Bird Watch is maintained strictly by dedicated volunteers, usually with donated cash and materials.  This month however the Board stepped up to the plate and took a swing at helping the volunteers' efforts with some much needed funding.

We here at Salton Sea West applaud all the volunteers that have struggled to maintain this sometime Board ignored part of the Districts Park and Recreation System.

Thanks go out to Joe & Rachel, and Dean & Carlene (hope we got the names right) and everyone else that has donated their time and resources over the past years.  Thanks!

 CORE COMMISSION FORMED

At the March 21st, 2006 District Board Meeting, Resolution 2005-12-2 (Barrett) was unanimously passed by  the Board of Directors.  This created the Community Recreational Complex Commission (CORE)   The Commission will consist of 2 Directors plus 5 district residents. The Resident Commissioners were selected by lottery at the April 18th Board meeting to serve a 1 year term.  It will be the responsibility of the Commission to assess and plan for present and future recreational needs of the Community and to report their findings to the Board of Directors for further action.

The “Community Recreational Commission Report on Parks and Recreation” was presented to the Board of Directors of the Salton Community Services District on September 19, 2006 at the monthly board meeting.

On November 21st, 2006,  CORE presented the Board of Directors with a 12 page report on costs of implementation titled "CORE Park Development Costs by Park Type"

Community Recreation (CORE)

CORE DISBANDED!

On November 21st, 2006, after CORE had presented the Board of Directors with a 12 page report titled "CORE Park Development Costs by Park Type"  Directors Butler, Palmer, and Rouhe voted CORE out of existence.

CORE had been in existence for only 7 months but in that time they had presented the Board with dozens of pages of reports and studies concerning the recreational needs of the community.  CORE's hard work was used to get the Districts Service Area Plan (SAP) approved by LAFCO.

Maybe now that CORE is gone the Board of Directors can complete the Parks repair list that was developed 3 years ago and of which Directors Palmer and Butler already had 3 years to complete.  CORE was all set up and ready for that task but the 3 Directors said that they could do it themselves.  Only time will tell if there's any proof in that pudding.
